This is really cool: farm dogs are an integral part of any farm. Well-trained dogs perform many functions that farmers are incapable of doing themselves. Protection, herding, predator deterrent and a warning system are just a few things livestock dogs do. Their diligence often protects the fresh produce you enjoy every week in your CSA baskets.
BeeWench Farm has a few “unconventional” farm dogs. A Black and Tan Coonhound, Buddy, is our resident tracker. He keeps his nose to the ground, when he isn’t napping on the porch, and helps as a predator deterrent.
Moose, our 3 year old Rott, is a big puppy…but he is learning!
Dusty is our 12 year old Beagle, she isn’t great for much, but acts as an early warning if something is amiss. And she’s really good at cleaning up any food we spill!
Our hope is that when/if we get a bigger piece of property, we will find a livestock dog that will spend his/her time with the herd.
