I can’t believe it’s October already! This year has flown by! Our summer CSA is almost over, just a couple more weeks…and Fall will be starting on 10/19.
As much as I hate to see the warm days of summer fade, I am enjoying the bounty of the fresh veggies coming from the garden right now. I love winter squash, fresh greens and hearty root crops like carrots and beets. Baby radishes are already poking their heads out of the ground and should be just perfect for the start of the fall Community Supported Agriculture season.
I also look forward to the rejuvenation and fresh start that winter and the subsequent spring bring. Luckily, I don’t have any snow to contend with during the winter months and can spend time working on infrastructure projects around the farm.
Giving the soil time to restore and recharge, by grazing the livestock over it, allows for more nutrient dense growing next season.
One of my most favorite parts of the ‘off season’ is choosing what to grow for next year. I LOVE getting input on favorites or wants from my CSA members. If you were a CSA member in 2013 make sure to keep an eye out for an email with a survey about your experience and what you’d like to see next year!
Locally yours,
Sarah
