2015 has been a whirlwind year for us here at BWF. When we moved here in October of 2014 we had high hopes for what we could accomplish here. Starting out the early part of the year with the loss of my off-farm job really kicked us into high gear with what we had planned. My being at the farm full time allowed us to increase the number of CSA shares we offered, double the farmers market days and increase chicken production exponentially.
Its funny how sometimes your plan can take a direction that you had no idea was even an option. The chicken, pork and turkey demand this past year has shown us that ‘protein’ is the market for us. While the vegetables will always be important to me, we realized that the amount of work it took to produce 2 acres of row crops was more than we wanted to handle. For 2016 we will not be doing the CSA subscription like we have done in the past. CSA this year will be on a first come, first serve basis with what we have available. Our plan is to create a mailing list of folks interested in vegetables and when we have shares available we will send out an email and those that respond will be able to purchase a share that week. No commitments, no contracts and most importantly for these overworked farmers…no pressure!
We know that many of you will be disappointed we aren’t doing our traditional shares, but in order to keep this farm viable and in business this is the direction that will be most sustainable for us. Ryan and I both have business degrees that help us in making important and sometimes hard decisions…even if they are for the best.
We’re very excited about the potential we know is in this place and each change of season allows us to see the revitalization happening with proper management. Thank all of you for your support this past year and, as always, we look forward to being YOUR farmer for 2016 and beyond!
